What’s your why?
When was the last time you stopped to remind yourself why you set up your business? Are you still following your passion or has it been drowned in a sea of emails? Or knocked off course by a load of opportunities you feel you ‘should’ be following to grow your business?
There are two really important reasons why, as leaders and entrepreneurs, we need to know why we’re in business and then shout about it from the rooftops.
- Being clear and passionate about your purpose helps your ideal clients want to do business with you again and again. This is even more important when you’re providing a service that’s based on trust and relationships. People want to know a bit about you before they work with you and there’s something irresistible about someone who’s committed to the same cause as they are. A clear ‘why’ makes it easier to talk and write about your business with enthusiasm and as the ‘real you’.A clear 'why' makes it easier to talk and write about your business Click To Tweet
- It gives you a source of continual drive and determination to succeed in your business no matter what. Do not underestimate how important this is. We all know that running a business is not plain sailing. Doing something that you truly care about will keep you striving to do your best on the days when you feel like giving up.
You owe it to your clients, and yourself, to do something you’re passionate about – anything less is just compromise
Who wants to live a life that’s based on compromise? The average small business owner in the UK works more than 50 hours a week. That’s a long time to spend doing something that you don’t enjoy.
How to fall back in love with your business
To check that you’re still following your passion, try asking yourself these questions:
- What was it that first inspired you to start your business?
- How do you want to help people?
- What change do you want to see in the world/your community?
- What do you want to be remembered for?
It doesn’t need to be a world-changing campaign, just something that you are excited about that will make a difference to your dream clients.
For me, it’s my belief that each business, leader and entrepreneur has a unique and fascinating story to tell, which will help their clients and colleagues build connections with them. I’m on a mission to help as many people as possible find their story and use it to create a successful business and a life that makes them happy.
So what’s your why? I’d love you to share it in the comments box below.

An inspiring and intelligent post about something that we sometimes forget to check in with. This underlines what I have learnt from moving out of corporate life and starting my own business – that work is easier, more enjoyable and more effective when you are brave enough to be totally authentic and true to your values. Basically, you have a much greater chance of success if you enjoy walking YOUR walk as well as talking YOUR talk! Thank’s Lucy – looking forward to your next blog post.
Thank you for your comments, Louise. So pleased it resonated with you. Sounds like you’re definitely doing something you’re passionate about!
